Spirit Days- Continued!

In January, BMS started a new spirit day activity. Every Friday during lunch, students could bring in a can of soup, thus earning a chance to answer a sports trivia question. During the first week we collected sixty-six cans of soup. Every can of soup was worth five trivia questions. The more soup, the more questions you could answer. According to Mrs.Felczak, she has been running a Souper Bowl contest for a few years as a way to get soup to the needy. Having students bring in soup to take a chance to win the prize is a community service activity, therefore adding hours to students' community service requirement. The second Friday's questions dealt with the language of the sport. In other words, what term goes with which sport? The purpose was to get soup, have fun, and earn points for the color teams.

Snowed In

Ever think a house is just a little too small for its occupants? Well, now imagine forty-four people in a three-bedroom house with ONE bathroom. Just a little crowded, right? This is what happened to Christine and Randy Glover for two nights in New Mexico.

It all started with a heavy snowstorm and a group of motorists who were stuck in traffic. These motorists were freezing and needed a place to warm up for a few hours, so they went over to the house closest to the highway, the Glover's house. What these people didn't know, though, was that they would be warming up for the next two days.

The storm got worse, and more people stopped by, ending up with forty-four people. The Glover's house was not that big, but they made-do by playing dominos and just getting to know everyone who had come over.

Luckily, a car transporting groceries was stuck outside the Glover's house, enabling the family to feed all forty-four people.

The Glovers really enjoyed helping everyone out for the weekend; Christine said about her husband and herself that, "We kind of missed them all when they left. I'm having kind of an empty nest thing. I've been waiting my whole life to get a chance to help people like that." (Quote courtesy of Pensacola News Journal).

Subway Hero

Wesley Autrey, a construction worker, was waiting to ride the subway in order to take his daughters home before going to work his night shift. While waiting for the subway to arrive, a man, Cameron Hollopeter, twenty years old, had a seizure and fell. Autrey and two other women immediately jumped down and helped Hollopeter up. He stumbled, though, and fell between the tracks. The subway was coming. Autrey made a split decision and put himself on top of the twenty-year-old and pushed them both down so they would just be below the train's reach.

Both people lived, coming out from under the train with only a few bruises. Hollopeter was taken to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, but Autrey was not, insisting that he was all right.

Wesley Autrey said about the situation, "I don't feel like I did something spectacular; I just saw someone who needed help. I did what I felt was right." (Quote courtesy of The New York Times).

Wacky Holidays

Did you know that there is at least one holiday every day? There are the well-known holidays like Christmas and Easter, but there are also some holidays that no one knows about (and maybe for a good reason). For example, February 4th is "Create a Vacuum Day". I do not know where that came from; I just know it is wacky.

Here are the ten holidays the newspaper staff likes the most (not in any particular order):

  1.  May 9 - Lost Sock Memorial Day
  2.  March 3 - If Pets Had Thumbs Day
  3.  May 14 - Dance Like a Chicken Day
  4.  October 2 - Name Your Car Day
  5.  October 31 - Increase Your Psychic Powers Day
  6.  January 9 - Play God Day
  7.  January 11 - Jump in a Puddle
  8.  January 30 - National Inane Answering Message Day
  9.  February 11 - Don't Cry Over Spilled Milk Day
10.  June 8 - Name Your Poison Day
