Interview with Coach St. Hours: Girls’ Basketball
Q:
Do you enjoy coaching this year's team?
A: Yes I enjoyed
coaching this year's team. It was a great group of girls.
Q:
Have you ever done this before?
A: Yes, this is my
5th year coaching girls’ basketball, 4th at Bernardsville Middle School.
Q:
How many girls were on the team this year?
A: There were 28
girls on the team this year.
Q:
How many wins and losses did the team have?
A: Our record was
4-14.
Q:
Are you proud of your team's effort this year?
A: Yes, despite not
having a winning record the girls worked hard and never gave up.
Q:
How did your team improve over the season?
A: I would say our
biggest improvement over the course of the season was the girls became
more aggressive, especially defensively.
Q:
What does your practice include? How many times
a week?
A: A typical practice
includes lay-up and shooting drills followed by working on our offensive
plays. We usually would practice 3 days a week being we have to share
the gym with the boys’ team.
Q:
What was the one thing your team impressed you
with?
A: My team impressed
me with their high spirit and always playing hard even when we were
facing some pretty tough teams. The girls always had a great time
whether they won or lost.
Boys’ Basketball: Q&A with Mr. Porter
Q: What
was the team’s count (Wins and losses)?
A: We finished the
regular season with 7 wins and 10 losses. Though we did not have a
winning record I am not completely dissatisfied, as we have strengthened
our schedule of opponents over the last few years.
Q: What
does it take to be a basketball player and do you have any advice for
people in the future to be on your team?
A: To be a
successful basketball player one must be disciplined on and off of the
court. They must have the motivation to practice fundamentals such as
dribbling and foul shots on their own time at home, so that when they
arrive for practice they can develop and play as a team.
Q: What
is the most important quality of a basketball player?
A: Ambition
and a desire to win are extremely important qualities. There must be an
innate desire to be competitive.
Q: What
did you think of the team when you watched them play their first game?
A: I felt that we
had a lot of potential and desire.
Wrestling: A New BMS
Sport!!
Q& A with Coach Latzke
Q: How did you come
to think of this club?
A:
Bernardsville has had a very successful recreation program in wrestling
over the years. The majority of schools that we competed against,
though, were school-based programs. The program was started as a way to
increase our level of competition as well as giving students another
option for athletics during the winter season.
Q: Were you a
wrestler yourself?
A: I wrestled
in high school, but didn't start until I was a freshman. As with any
sport, it takes time and dedication to improve your technique. Starting
wrestling at an earlier age gives students a chance to learn more moves
and gain a greater level of comfort on the mat.
Q: How many wins and
losses did the team have?
A: Team wins
are determined by wrestling individual bouts and then combining your
score. There are 16 weight classes and therefore 16 bouts during a
match. Since we only filled half of the weight classes, we were at a
disadvantage. We fared well in our final tournament though. 7
Wrestlers placed in the top three with one wrestling winning the JV
tournament and another placing third in the varsity tournament.
Q: What does your
practice include? How many times a week?
A: We practice
Tuesday through Friday from 3:15 to 4:45. Practice includes a
combination of conditioning, strength training and wrestling technique.
Q: What was the one
thing your team impressed you with?
A: I was very
impressed with the attitude of my team throughout the season. Many of
them were wrestling for the first time. Wrestling is different from
other sports in that it is individual and you are the only one
responsible for the outcome of your match. This year's team always
carried themselves with poise in victory and defeat.
Q: How did your team
improve over the season?
A: Our final
tournament, as I mentioned above, showed the growth of all members on
the team. Some wrestlers, who had not won during the season, were very
successful during their final contest.
Q: Are you planning
on coaching this activity next year?
A: Yes
Q: How many team
members did you have this year?
A: We had 11
members on the team this year and will hopefully add many more next
year.
Thanks to Coach Latzke for implementing this great sport into our school!
