Q and A with Miss Malwitz about Girls’ Field Hockey

Q. How many wins did you have this season and how many losses?
A. We had 1 win, 8 losses, and 1 tie.

Q. What makes a great team?
A.
I think you have to have a good attitude and never give up, even when you are losing or frustrated. You have to have confidence and believe that you can win and beat the other team. I also think you have to practice hard. You cannot just expect to play well in a game if you don’t work your hardest in practice. And you need to practice on your own – the only way a team will get better is if each individual player gets better.

Q. Is there a championship and if so, have you ever been to it?
A. There is no championship for field hockey.

Q. When does the team meet?
A.
We have practices or games every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for the month of September and October.

Q. Do you have any advice for girls who want to be on the girls’ field hockey team?
A. Get a stick and start playing. You don’t need to be on a team or go to a camp (although that helps!) but just play in your yard or driveway. Find a friend who wants to play too and pass to one another. You just need to get used to the stick. And make sure you are in shape – there is a ton of running in field hockey and you need to have endurance.

Q. Do you teach any other sport, and if so what sport do you like to coach the most?
A. I have also coached track and field. They are very different – field hockey is a team sport while track is mostly individual. I like coaching both teams, but there is no way to compare them!
