The Bernards High School Marching Band was quite active throughout the greater Somerset Hills communities this spring. On May 25th, they supported Bernardsville and Bedminster by participating in the Bernardsville Memorial Day Parade and sending students to Bedminster to march in their parade.

Two Bernards High School students were nominated for awards at the Central Jersey Marquee Awards ceremony on May 18, 2026.

Having been nominated in the fall and selected in winter, the following five staff members were recently honored at two spring events as either Educator of the Year or Educational Services Professional of the Year: from Bedwell Elementary School, Jess Collins and Lauren Smith; from Bernardsville Middle School, Kristene Tresslar and Jaclyn Pasquarelli; and Heather Hunkele from Bernards High School.

At its Board of Education meeting on May 20, 2026, the Somerset Hills School District approved Mrs. Jessica McGinn as Supervisor of Athletics, Health, and Physical Education for the 2026-2027 school year. She will join the district on July 1, 2026.

On May 13, 2026, this year’s National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners were announced across the country. These Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Sean Chen, a freshman at Bernards High School, received notice mid-spring that his painting, Love Language: Dim Sum, had earned both a Gold Medal and the Flaunt It Award from the 2026 National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Arianna Nodes, a senior at Bernards High School, was recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for May!

Following their non-fiction unit, third grade students at Bedwell Elementary School have been working diligently on a character studies literacy unit, where they focused on character development and inferencing skills. 

At its Board of Education meeting on April 15, 2026, the Somerset Hills School District approved Mrs. Arielle Rementilla as Assistant Principal of Bedwell Elementary School for the 2026-2027 school year.

Ninfa “Abi” Miranda,  a senior at Bernards High School, was recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for April!

On Wednesday, March 11th, five student leaders from the Technology and Robotics club kicked off their 3rd annual STEM competition at Bernards High School.

The excitement was over the top at Bedwell Elementary School during this year’s Battle of the Books finale, where six outstanding 4th grade teams competed for the championship!

The St. Baldrick's fundraiser at Bernards High School was a huge success once again! On the evening of March 4th, 2026, a total of 16 students and one staff member volunteered to have their heads shaved for a very worthy cause, as nearly 150 attendees cheered them on!

Abbie Dooley, a senior at Bernards High School, was recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for March!

At an evening banquet on March 2, 2026, thirteen students across the county were recipients of the Unsung Hero Award on behalf of the Somerset County School Boards Association. They were celebrated by parents, guardians, family, friends, and members of their school community.

As "Wicked-mania" continues to grip the headlines, let's not forget L. Frank Baum’s classic novel that started it all.  The Wizard of Oz comes to life in the faithful stage adaptation presented by Bernards High School Performing Arts featuring all the most beloved songs and moments from the 1939 classic film. It's a must see for anyone who loves the classic tale!

On February 10, 2026, the entire eighth grade class at Bernardsville Middle School hosted a Research Symposium. The event was the culmination of a literacy initiative run by Brett Cox, Pilar Medina, Dawn Russo, Jessica Tynan and Danielle McGovern who were recognized at the February 19th Board of Education Meeting.

To combat antisemitism, Bernardsville Middle School welcomed a panel of nine guests on February 3, 2026. A blending of history and present day, middle school students heard about the Jewish experience from descendants of Holocaust survivors, as well as from a group of their peers.

Derek Zacatenco has been selected as the new Head Coach for Boys Lacrosse. He was approved by the Somerset Hills Board of Education at their public meeting on February 19, 2026.

With winter comes “winter weather,” and most elementary school children hope for a snow day (or two)! Bedwell students were lucky enough not only to have the recent snowstorm drop 18 inches on Bernardsville, but also to learn from a well-known meteorologist, John Marshall.

Lucie Robles, a senior at Bernards High School, was recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for February.

Fourth grade students at Bedwell Elementary School have been working on a volunteer project called Origami for Others where they create origami with inspirational messages for people in the community.

Although the snow delayed their competition by two days, the BHS Technology Club was intently focused on January 29, 2026 when they competed at Passaic County Technical Institute in Wayne, NJ and took home a first place trophy!     

The BMS Random Acts of Kindness Club celebrated a very successful Sock Donation Drive this winter!

Two talented choir students from Bernardsville Middle School have been selected for the prestigious CJMEA (Central Jersey Music Educators Association) Intermediate Honors Choir, a highly competitive ensemble that attracts hundreds of students from across the region. This is a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to the hard work, dedication, and musical talent of these young individuals.

A Bernardsville High School student has earned international recognition for her work in artificial intelligence, placing at the global level in one of the world’s largest youth AI competitions.

Bernards High School was named to the 2025 AP School Honor Roll as a Gold member!

Joining the Somerset Hills School District in 2004, Shane Porter has worked as a Social Studies teacher, impacting thousands of students at Bernardsville Middle School in their quest to learn about history, civics, government, and the world around them.

Adaneli Tomas Lopez, a senior at Bernards High School, was recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for January.

On January 5, 2026, the Somerset Hills Board of Education met for its annual Reorganization Meeting. Three Board members took the Oath of Office administered by Mr. Richard Liguori, Business Administrator/Board Secretary.

Mengchen Zhang, a junior at Bernards High School, was recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for December.

The student-run publication of Bernards High School, The Crimson, was recognized by SNO Sites as a 2025-2026 SNO Distinguished Site-one of the highest honors a scholastic news website can achieve.

A back-to-school tradition or rite of passage for many, is selecting a new backpack at the start of the year…or dusting off an old faithful, excited for the prospect of what lies ahead. For almost a decade, 3rd graders at Bedwell Elementary School have been taking it a step further when it comes to their backpack quest.

All families are unique to say the least… especially the Addams, with their penchant for the creepy, the kooky, and the altogether spooky!

Dr. Scott Neigel, principal of Bernards High School, has announced that ten students have been recognized by the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Patryk Grabowy, a senior at Bernards High School, was recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for November.

Ms. Terri Johnson has a teaching philosophy that reflects collaboration and community, and the students have been loving it!

Lauren Cava and Abby Alvez are staunch supporters of equipping students with tools to reduce anxiety and stress.

On October 21st, it was a louder, and much more colorful evening on Seney Drive! As a way to bring families together, Bernardsville Middle School hosted a Color Run that had parents, guardians, students, and siblings running for their health… and a great cause!

Anakh Sawhney, a junior at Bernards High School, was recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for October.

Remember the 1944 film starring Cary Grant?  Well the Bernards High School Performing Arts students are bringing the beloved classic Arsenic and Old Lace to the stage, promising audiences a madcap comedy that will keep them laughing and on the edge of their seats!

On Saturday, October 11th, the Bernards High School Peer Leadership program hosted a community car wash outside the Olcott Building to benefit Community in Crisis.

Ana Carolina Borbolla Menare, a senior at Bernards High School, was recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for  September.

Entering her 3rd year of teaching at the start of September brought forth a new level of excitement for Alex Haenny.

“Come one, come all.” That was the energy in the Bernards High School Media Center during lunch block on September 26, 2025. And it is safe to say that hundreds came as student club leaders eagerly welcomed their peers to learn about the 35+ club opportunities available at BHS.

The Peer Leadership Program at Bernards High School continues to be a hallmark of student engagement, service, and leadership development. Guided by faculty advisors Justin Kaufman (Mathematics) and Alyssa Samson (Physical Education), the program brings together a dedicated group of students who embody empathy, inclusivity, and a passion for supporting their peers.

This summer, Patricia Kupper accepted the National Award for Exemplary Programs in French. At the national conference of the American Association of Teachers of French, nine schools in the nation received an award.

The Somerset Hills School District partnered with the community at large to host another successful event welcoming students and families back to school!

Eight talented students from Bernardsville Middle School were selected to participate in the New Jersey American Choral Directors Association (NJ-ACDA) Summer Honors Choir. 

At the August 27th Somerset Hills School District Board of Education Meeting, Connor Flynn was recognized for his dedication and perseverance in his role as Webmaster.

On August 12th and 13th, Dr. Brian Brotschul hosted Review-Preview: An Administrative Retreat for the team of Somerset Hills School District administrators, school leaders, supervisors, and department heads.

The crack of the bat. The whoosh of the ball.  With some people, sports are in their blood. That is definitely the case with Phil Mahlik, who has accepted the position of Head Baseball Coach at Bernards High School for the 2025-2026 school year.

In celebration of Arbor Day, students, educators, and community members gathered at the beginning of June for a special tree dedication ceremony at Bedwell Elementary School and Bernardsville Middle School. The event was organized in partnership with the Bernardsville Shade Tree Committee and the district, highlighting the shared commitment to environmental education and community involvement.

It has been more than four decades that Bernards High School athletes have been chasing the track record set back in 1983 by Paul Stogryn, Sean Tutton, Chris Blanchett and John Carlotti. This past June, to the jaw-dropping amazement of coaches, spectators, and the runners themselves, the chase has ended.

Mr. Matthew LaPine, Choral Director at Bernards High School, was named quarterfinalist for the 2026 GRAMMY Music Educator Award.

Bernardsville Middle School has been named a Capturing Kids’ Hearts Rising Star School! The implementation of the CKH motivational program kicked off in February 2024 with the Somerset Hills School District administrative team and select staff members participating in a flagship training.

Charlie Quinn, a student from Bernards High School in Bernardsville, New Jersey has been selected for the prestigious NASA STEM Enhancement in Earth Science (SEES) summer internship sponsored by NASA and The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Space Research.

Peter McCaffery, a senior at Bernards High School, was recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for June.

Luke LaChac joined Arthur Aston on the May 29, 2025 podcast episode of the Inclusion Think Tank, produced by the NJCIE.

On May 22, 2025, the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Club successfully completed its annual donation drive at Bernardsville Middle School, collecting an assortment of cat and dog food, toys, and other essential items to help an abundance of animals in need. These donations were delivered to Eleventh Hour Rescue in Rockaway.

We all know that age-old question… What’s for dinner? Well, Bernardsville Middle School 6th graders have cooked up a solution to that, in their recently published cookbook called BMS Cooks!

Darcey Brooten's  “Super Siblings Reading Program” at Bedwell Elementary School is officially underway in the BES Media Center.

The Garden Club at Bedwell Elementary School has been hard at work for weeks, preparing the campus' beds and gardens for the growing season. With over 25 third and fourth grade student volunteers, there are many tasks to get done and they have been working as a team! 

The Bernards High School Gardening Club hosted its second successful Terrarium Building event, welcoming a crowd of ~70participants.

Ellie Fuhrmann, a senior at Bernards High School, was recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for May.

The Girl Up Club at Bernards High School started an “Empowerment Initiative” this year. One component is for club members to create an informative display in the BHS History Hallway display case every month for various heritage month celebrations.

The Bernards High School Green Team has been leading the way in helping BHS become a River-Friendly Certified School.

Congratulations to Bernardsville Middle School student Samuel Emery for receiving the Paul Robeson Youth Achievement Award in the Arts! 

As part of a Bernards High School unit on overlooked chapters in American history, students in the Untold Histories elective had the opportunity to meet Kristen Martin, a journalist and author of ‘The Sun Won’t Come Out Tomorrow: The Dark History of Orphanages in the USA.’

The 16th Annual Crimson Cafe was held prior to Spring Break in the Performing Arts Center at Bernards High School.

Kaley Welsh, a senior at Bernards High School, has been recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for April.

Six months ago, student leaders from Bernardsville Middle School and Bernards High School gathered together for the SHSD Youth Summit on Antisemitism. As a result of that powerful experience, many attendees were inspired to make a difference.

At a Special Board of Education meeting held on March 31, 2025, the Somerset Hills School District approved Mr. Scott Wolfe as Principal of Bedwell Elementary School for the 2025-2026 school year. 

The Bernardsville Middle School Culture & Climate Committee hosted its 2nd Pi Day school spirit event! Playing off Pi Day in March, the irrational number representing the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter had a much sweeter (and humorous) take, as numerous BMS staff volunteered for a pie in the face. For their participation, they earned coveted House Points for one of the following: Duke, Penn State, Princeton, or Rutgers.

From March 3rd-21st, Bernardsville Middle School collected gently-worn clothing donations. This initiative was thanks to the partnership of the BMS Green Team and BMS Community Service Club.

For over 20 years, Bedwell Elementary School has hosted Battle of the Books, a competition that challenges 4th grade students to test their reading comprehension, teamwork, and memory skills. This year’s event, which took place on March 14, 2025, was another unforgettable chapter in that tradition.

At its Budget Retreat on March 15, 2025, the Somerset Hills School District approved Mr. Richard D. Liguori as Business Administrator/Board Secretary.

The Somerset Hills Board of Education met on Saturday, March 15, 2025, for their annual public Budget Retreat and adopted a tentative budget for the 2025-2026 (FY26) school year.

Lucian Spiteri, a junior at Bernards High School, has been recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for March.

On March 5, 2025 the Somerset Hills School District was represented once again at the annual TCNJ Education Job Fair in Ewing, New Jersey.

Congratulations to the 32 students in the Bernards High School Harvard Model Congress delegation for their impressive performances in Boston this February!

This winter, Bedwell Elementary School completed its first ever LEGO design contest in conjunction with World LEGO Day!

Amaya Ram and Parker Caponigro, BMS 8th graders, won the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) nationwide French writing contest!

Kudos to Bedwell Elementary School! They set out to collect as many boxes of cereal as possible to donate to Market Street Mission with the idea that they could demonstrate a "chain reaction,” literally and figuratively, with a giant cereal box domino path and the earnest goal of doing good.

ThinkFast Interactive lived up to its name when the experience came to Bernards High School on February 4, 2025. As the culmination of their BHS Auto Safety requirement, the entire sophomore class took part in the fun, fast-paced teen driver safety program.

Kayli McGowan-Kinney, a senior at Bernards High School, is being recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for February.

Seizing a grant opportunity from the Bedwell Home School Association, Bedwell’s Technology & Design teacher Allen Thurlow applied for, and was awarded, an upgraded 3D printer. The Bambu A1 3D printer boasts many new advancements when it comes to enhanced technology over the past few years. 

Congratulations to BHS Newspaper Advisor Heather Hunkele and to the entire Crimson staff for being named a SNO Distinguished Site for the 3rd year in a row!

To kick off the March Madness themed 2025 Battle of the Books at Bedwell Elementary School, was guest speaker Juliene Brazinski Simpson.

In the classes of Sam Turner and Dawn Russo, the recent and current literacy units could be described as fan favorites for sure!

Nine teams. More than sixty students playing. Tons of noise, action, and enthusiasm!  The first-ever Volleyball Tournament, organized by Bernards High School junior class officers, was held during the evening of January 16th.

Mrs. Holly Jablonski began her teaching career in the Somerset Hills School District in 2006 and has dedicated her 18-year career to the students of Bedwell.

The MLL (Multilingual Learners) Club, in collaboration with Sally Roser from Community in Crisis, organized its first community service project of the year to support Cardz for Kidz, an organization that distributes handmade cards to pediatric patients nationwide.

Bernardsville Middle School students were eager to remain focused on their science studies, even though the Thanksgiving break was days away.

The American Institute of Archaeology (AIA) is celebrating the creative work of Jared Ciocco, Bernards High School Latin teacher, and Kayli McGowan-Kinney, one of his standout AP students, for their innovative approach to integrating archaeology into the SHSD Latin program and newly created BHS Latin Club.

The Bernardian, Bernards High School's yearbook, received numerous awards at the Garden State Scholastic Press Association's Fall Conference on October 28, 2024.

Nearby Bedminster resident Dan “Loran” Larson has been collecting golf balls and donating them to those with a passion for the sport right here in Somerset Hills!

Bernards High School earned Silver recognition on the 2024 AP School Honor Roll. 

The Bernards High School Performing Arts Center presents Neil Simon's "Rumors". Set in the 1980's, this riotous comedy takes place during an elegant dinner party hosted by New York's Deputy Mayor. A tale of mistaken identities, cover-ups, and outrageous RUMORS, this play has something for everyone!

One hundred student leaders gathered in the Bernards High School PAC one year and one day following the October 7 terror attack on Israel, the worst attack on Jewish people since the Holocaust. Since that event, an exponential rise in antisemitism has been seen and felt within New Jersey, across the country, and throughout many nations abroad.

Ari Rosen, a senior at Bernards High School, has been recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for October.

Dr. Scott Neigel, principal of Bernards High School, has announced that twelve students have been recognized by the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Get ready for a whirlwind of misunderstandings and hilarious antics as Bernards High School launches its production of Rumors: A Farce this November 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Elizabeth St. Ours, a Bernardsville Middle School PE Teacher, was nationally recognized as a grant recipient by the American Heart Association. She was awarded $2,400 to purchase equipment for BMS students to promote living healthier lives.

A weekend back-to-school celebration was open to families throughout the Somerset Hills community on September 14th, 2024.

On September 16, 2024, the Somerset Hills Board of Education held a special evening meeting in the Community Room at Bernards High School.

The Bernards High School Green Team has joined the NexTrex Recycling Challenge!

On August 29th the Bernards High School Marching Mountaineers held a preview performance of their 2024 show called  "Bruno Mars's 24K Jukebox" on Olcott Field. 

From August 27th-29th, the Somerset Hills School District hosted new educators at its New Teacher Orientation.

The Somerset Hills School District is proud to announce that Fin Spitaleri has been selected for the United Soccer Coaches High School Scholar All-America Team.

Mr. Michael Richter has been selected as the Interim Assistant Principal of Bernardsville Middle School for the 2024-2025 school year. 

At its Board of Education meeting on June 26, 2024, the Somerset Hills School District approved Mrs. Jasmine Akauola as Assistant Principal of Bedwell Elementary School for the 2024-2025 school year. 

The Somerset Hills School District has selected Mr. Keith Koellhoffer as Acting Principal of Bedwell Elementary School for the 2024-2025 school year. 

Bernards High students competing in the Chemistry I division of the New Jersey Science League placed 7th in the state from a pool of 72 competing schools.

Bernards High School is the recipient of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Safe Sports School award for its Athletic Program.

Wilmer Medina Oseguera, a junior at Bernards High School, has been recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for June!

On May 8, 2024, this year’s National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners were announced. These Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program. 

On April 12, 2024, the Bernards High School Student Council hosted their 5th Wall of Honor Induction Ceremony, honoring seven alumni who made outstanding contributions to their field. 

Mary McDowell, a junior at Bernards High School, has been recognized by the school as the “Everyday Hero” for May!

Since 2015, the television series about entrepreneurs pitching ideas to venture capitalists (aka the sharks) has hit a bit closer to home at Bernardsville Middle School.

At the 33rd annual Paul Robeson Youth Achievement Awards, Samuel Emery represented Bernardsville Middle School as an Achievement in Scholarship nominee.

Going to Disney is exciting for many, but to perform there is an extra special treat! In late March, Mr. Stephen Taesler and forty-four talented musicians from Bernards High School’s Concert Band and Orchestra headed to Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Nominees for the monthly Everyday Hero Program are students who have a positive influence on the student body through exemplary qualities.

The Somerset Hills Board of Education members met on Saturday, March 9, 2024 for a three hour Budget Retreat where Dr. Brian Brotschul, Superintendent of Schools, presented an overview of the tentative budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025.

On the evening of March 7, 2024, the Somerset Hills community gathered at Bernards High School for a special event, to raise money for a special reason, in honor of a special person… Campbell Hoyt.

The lightbulb moment took place on a school bus ride home from Paramus.  It was then that four BHS students, having just competed in their very first STEM challenge, knew that they had to host their own STEM competition on the Bernards High School campus.

A favorite of the four units of Social Studies at Bedwell Elementary School, is that of Native American History.

At the February 21, 2024 Board of Education meeting, Dr. Brian Brotschul welcomed Joseph Stout from Suplee, Clooney & Company.

At the New Jersey Physics Olympics, a state-wide competition hosted by the New Jersey American Association of Physics Teachers, the Somerset Hills School District earned a 2nd place overall win!

Tyce Hanratty is a Bernards High School freshman who stands out for all the right reasons, with modesty and kindness.

On January 30, 2024 Maschio’s Food Services hosted a Chef Day Sauce Tasting event for students in Bernards High School.

Three students from Bernardsville Middle School have been recognized by the American Association of Teachers of French Jeunes Amis du Français, the only nationally recognized honor society for middle school students of French.

The turn of the calendar to a new year is often cause for celebration and excitement, and the month of January did not disappoint the staff and advisor of The Pinnacle, the art and literary magazine of Bernards High School.

The students at Bedwell Elementary School participated in the Great Kindness Challenge, a global grassroots kindness movement that included over 41,000 schools across 115 countries this year.

The students’ focus was threefold…strikes, spares, and socializing. On January 24, 2024 the Bernards High School Bowling team had their first match against Mt. Olive, in the Unified Sports League, and it was a success!

On January 11, 2024, sixty-three Bernardsville Middle School choir students boarded two buses headed to yet another stop on their musical journey.

On January 11th, 2024, twenty-five students from the Somerset Hills School District competed in the New Jersey Science League Competition at nearby Ridge High School.

The Directors of Athletics Association of New Jersey (DAANJ) has selected Michael Hoppe as their 2023-2024 North 2 Section Award of Merit Recipient.

To kick off 2024, our newest Everyday Hero is Betsy Lezme. 

On January 4th, dubbed National Spaghetti Day, Bernardsville Middle School celebrated with a passion for pasta! Students from the Culture & Climate Team prepared a festive gathering for students and staff. 

From Thanksgiving until Winter Break, many staff members at Bernards High School participated in a fundraiser to raise money for the Somerset County Food Bank. Resurrecting an idea done pre-pandemic, Nick Hemans organized the Bernards Beard Contest.

As we head into the holiday, Assistant Principal Chris Keri, has a lot to be grateful for. 

Spanning multiple visits throughout November and December, Bernardsville Middle School 7th graders had the opportunity to meet and interact with author and motivational speaker, D. West.
