The Bernards High School Green Team has been leading the way in helping BHS become a River-Friendly Certified School. In collaboration with the Raritan Headwaters Association, The Watershed Institute, and NJ Water Supply Authority, the River-Friendly School Program helps teachers, students, and school leaders reduce water pollution while creating new teaching opportunities, enhancing wildlife habitats and establishing a healthier environment for future generations. Certification is offered at several different levels based on points achieved through lessons and hands-on projects in any of the four river-friendly categories: water quality, water conservation, wildlife habitat, and education & outreach. To be certified "river friendly" each school is required to teach lessons on local water quality, water conservation, and wildlife habitat. So far the BHS Green team has tested the water quality of the school, done lessons on invasive species, and is planning to put native bluebird houses on campus. The team is passionate about getting this certification and will work hard to educate students, staff, and the community.
