In celebration of Arbor Day, students, educators, and community members gathered at the beginning of June for a special tree dedication ceremony at Bedwell Elementary School and Bernardsville Middle School. The event was organized in partnership with the Bernardsville Shade Tree Committee and the district, highlighting the shared commitment to environmental education and community involvement.


Two specially selected trees were planted during the event: a Kwanzan Flowering Cherry (Prunus serrulata 'Kwanzan') at Bedwell and an Ironwood (Carpinus caroliniana), also known as American Hornbeam, atBMS. Each tree was chosen for its beauty, ecological value, and long-term contribution to the school grounds. The Kwanzan cherry, known for its vibrant spring blossoms, complements the existing cherry trees along Bedwell’s walkway, while the American Hornbeam will provide shade and character to the middle school’s outdoor seating area.

The ceremony included local leaders, educators, and students. Special thanks to MaryJane Canose, Sam Frenda, Dr. Brian Brotschul, Dr. Coleen Butler, Richard Liguori, Lisa Garofalo, Keith Koellhoffer, Michelle Clark, Kathryn Reilly, Daina Gulbis, Jeff Calvert, Chris Ravera, and many BES/BMS students from their respective science classes, Garden Clubs, and Green Teams.

The Bernardsville Shade Tree Committee, appreciated the enthusiasm and collaboration that made the event possible. Shade Tree Committee member Chris Ravera added, "Planting trees is a powerful way to connect with nature, care for the planet, and grow stronger communities."
