Sweeter than Pi
The Bernardsville Middle School Culture & Climate Committee hosted its 2nd Pi Day school spirit event! Playing off Pi Day in March, the irrational number representing the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter had a much sweeter (and humorous) take, as numerous BMS staff volunteered for a pie in the face. For their participation, they earned coveted House Points for one of the following: Duke, Penn State, Princeton, or Rutgers. This year, a pie-eating contest for 7th and 8th grade students was an added element that drew a lot of excitement. There was one winner from each grade; congratulations to Titus Knaus and Siena Hill!
The following brave staff members volunteered to meet their match against the formidable desserts: Eric Calabrese, Adriane Gash, Annie O'Halloran, Pat McMillan, Allyssa Jurgens, Alexandra Haenny, Valerie Tchorz, George Petrie, Michelle Clark, Phil Mahlik, Liz St.Ours, Crystal Villagra, Salome Chaffee, Derek Boudreau, Lauren Brown, Carrie Walker, Ashley Oliveira, and Keith Koellhoffer.
Special thanks to BMS Culture and Climate advisors Dr. Rosemarie Rizzuto and Jackie Pasquarelli for their planning and support of the event; to Salome Escobar-Chaffee for creating the festive display; and to Aynslee Joyce for her painting of the bulldog for community service hours. The paint was donated by ACE Hardware of Bernardsville. What a community endeavor!
The Culture and Climate Committee was established at Bernardsville Middle School six years ago. As a group, their overall focus is on school activities that build a sense of belonging and community amongst students. This year, the committee and the PE Department planned two whole school House Days, which included physical challenges and Reindeer Games for the 5th and 6th graders. The group also hosted Country VS Country Club Day, Spaghetti Day, Groundhog Day Predictions, and a Candy Bracketing event, along with creating signs for our staff basketball players who faced off against the Wizards. Looking ahead, the Culture and Climate Committee will continue to create opportunities to build community, by fostering activities for students to interact and develop relationships with others outside of their immediate friend groups.
