WELCOME TO MATH 8!!
The goals of this course are to solidify what math students have already learned and prepare them for algebra and geometry. As in all math courses offered at the middle school, emphasis is placed on the use of mathematics to deal with the world around students. Algebra and geometry concepts that will be taught will include scientific notation, uses of variables, solving equations and inequalities. These algebraic concepts will be integrated through study of geometry of the plane, surface area, volume and probability. Data and statistics will also be covered with students showing knowledge of measures of central tendency and choosing and creating appropriate data displays. Open-ended questions involving geometric figures, algebraic formulas, graphing and the Pythagorean Theorem will also be used throughout the year. Students who successfully complete this course will be ready for Algebra the following year.
