Health Curriculum Update and Survey

Health Curriculum Update

As you may be aware, the New Jersey Department of Education adopted new Student Learning Standards in a variety of content areas in 2020, including Health and Physical Education (NJSLS-CHPE); the district is required to implement these new standards in the 2022-2023 school year. This summer, the SHSD Health curriculum will be updated to align to the new standards. The new curriculum will be introduced at a special Board of Education meeting, to be scheduled in August.

Parents/guardians have the right to opt out of this instruction per N.J.S.A.18A:35-4.7. The Somerset Hills School District fully supports and respects this right. Any parent/guardian who feels this instruction in health, family life education, or sex education is in conflict with their conscience or sincerely held moral or religious beliefs may have their child excused from that portion of the class. This summer the district will also finetune its opt out processes, so that each school can be certain that all parents/guardians are aware of the opt out protocols prior to any health instruction commencing in the fall.

The Somerset Hills School District welcomes feedback from all stakeholders prior to our curriculum update and in order to collect such information, we have included a survey to gather your thoughts. Thank you for helping us to help our students develop their physical and emotional well-being.
